CQC registration for a new practice
CQC registration is a gate, not a formality. It determines your opening date, and an application that goes back for clarification can add months to a programme where the rent is already running.
What this involves
- Determine which regulated activities you are carrying on and therefore what you must register for, which is less obvious than it sounds where a practice combines consultation, diagnostics and treatment.
- Prepare the provider and registered manager applications, including the statement of purpose, which is the document assessors read most closely and applicants treat most casually.
- Build the policy and governance framework the application assumes exists, rather than filing a policy pack that does not match how the clinic will actually run.
- Prepare the registered manager for interview.
- Sequence registration against the fit-out and the lease so the application is not submitted before the premises can support it, and not so late that it delays opening.
The mistake that costs the most
Starting the application when the building work finishes. Registration timelines are measured in months, and rent starts whether or not you can legally see patients. The application should be prepared in parallel with the fit-out, which requires knowing what the finished premises will look like and being able to evidence it before it exists.
Why this workstream matters
It is the single hardest constraint on your opening date, and the one most likely to be underestimated by clinicians who are used to being regulated as individuals rather than as providers.

How long does CQC registration take for a new private clinic?
Plan in months rather than weeks, and treat any specific figure with caution because the timeline depends on the completeness of the application and on CQC workload. What is within your control is whether the application goes back for clarification, which is the main avoidable cause of delay. Prepare it in parallel with the fit-out rather than after it.
Do I need a registered manager?
In most cases yes, and the registered manager has to be a real, suitably qualified individual who will be interviewed and who carries personal accountability. This is not a nominal appointment, and identifying the person late is a common cause of delay because their fitness evidence takes time to assemble.
What is the statement of purpose and why does it matter?
It sets out who you are, what you do, for whom and where. Assessors read it closely and it frames everything else in the application, yet applicants routinely treat it as boilerplate. A statement of purpose that does not match your policies, your premises or your intended activities generates exactly the clarification requests that delay registration.
