How to Write a Statement of Purpose for CQC Registration
What is a Statement of Purpose?
The Statement of Purpose is a legally required document that must be submitted as part of your CQC registration application and kept available for service users, staff, and inspectors. It describes who you are, what services you provide, and how you deliver care.
Legal Requirements
Under Regulation 12 of the Care Quality Commission (Registration) Regulations 2009, your Statement of Purpose must include specific information about your service, including the aims and objectives, the types of care provided, the registered manager details, and your contact information.
Writing Your Aims and Objectives
Your aims should clearly articulate your vision for the service and the outcomes you want to achieve for service users. Avoid generic statements and instead focus on specific, measurable objectives that reflect person-centred care principles.
Describing Your Services
Detail the regulated activities you will provide, your service user criteria, and any specialist services such as dementia care, end-of-life care, or support for specific conditions. Be specific about your geographical coverage and operating hours.
Staffing and Training
Outline your staffing structure, recruitment approach, and training programme. Demonstrate how you will ensure staff have the competencies required to deliver safe, effective care. Include details of mandatory training and specialist development opportunities.
Quality Assurance
Describe your systems for monitoring and improving service quality, including audits, service user feedback mechanisms, and governance arrangements. Show how you will identify and address areas for improvement.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Many applications fail because the Statement of Purpose is too generic, lacks specific detail, or does not align with the other application documents. Ensure consistency across your entire submission and tailor your content to your specific service model.
Keeping Your Statement Current
Your Statement of Purpose must be reviewed regularly and updated whenever there are significant changes to your service. CQC must be notified of amendments, and the latest version should always be accessible to service users and their families.
